When Jane and Elizabeth were alone, the former, who had been cautious in her praise of Mr. Bingley before, expressed to her sister just how very much she admired him.

“He is just what a young man ought to be,” said she, “sensible, good-humoured, lively; and I never saw such happy manners!—so much ease, with such perfect good breeding!”

“He is also handsome,” replied Elizabeth, “which a young man ought likewise to be, if he possibly can. His character is thereby complete.”

“I was very much flattered by his asking me to dance a second time. I did not expect such a compliment.”

“Did not you? I did for you. But that is one great difference between us. Compliments always take you by surprise, and me never. What could be more natural than his asking you again? He could not help seeing that you were about five times as pretty as every other woman in the room. No thanks to his gallantry for that. Well, he certainly is very agreeable, and I give you leave to like him. You have liked many a stupider person.”

"예상하지 못했다고? 내가 언니라면 예상했을거야. 하지만 이것이 우리의 가장 큰 차이점이야. 칭찬은 항상 언니를 놀라게하지, 그리고 나는 절대 그러지않아.

“I know you do; and it is that which makes the wonder. With your good sense, to be so honestly blind to the follies and nonsense of others! Affectation of candour is common enough—one meets with it everywhere. But to be candid without ostentation or design—to take the good of everybody’s character and make it still better, and say nothing of the bad—belongs to you alone. And so you like this man’s sisters, too, do you? Their manners are not equal to his.”

"나도 언니가 그런다는 거 아는데 궁금하단말이지. 분별력 뛰어난 언니가 

다른사람의 어리석음이나 허튼 수작에는 정말 깜깜하다고! 솔직한척 하는사람은 여기저기 널려있을 정도로 흔해 빠졌어. 하지만 과시하거나 속셈없이 솔직하게 다른사람의 좋은 성격만 봐주고 그것을 더 좋게 봐주고, 나쁜말을 안하는 사람은

“Certainly not—at first. But they are very pleasing women when you converse with them. Miss Bingley is to live with her brother, and keep his house; and I am much mistaken if we shall not find a very charming neighbour in her.”

 

"확실히 처음에는 별로였어. 하지만 니가 그들과 대화를 나눠보면 매우 괜찮은

여자들이야. 빙리 씨의 여동생은 오빠와 살면서 살림을 맡을거래. 내가 크게 잘못 하는것이 아니라면 우리는 그녀와 매우 좋은 이웃이 될거야.

Elizabeth listened in silence, but was not convinced; their behaviour at the assembly had not been calculated to please in general; and with more quickness of observation and less pliancy of temper than her sister, and with a judgement too unassailed by any attention to herself, she was very little disposed to approve them. They were in fact very fine ladies; not deficient in good humour when they were pleased, nor in the power of making themselves agreeable when they chose it, but proud and conceited.

엘리자베스는 조용히 듣고있었지만 납득하지못했다. 모임에서 그녀들의 행동은

They were rather handsome, had been educated in one of the first private seminaries in town, had a fortune of twenty thousand pounds, were in the habit of spending more than they ought, and of associating with people of rank, and were therefore in every respect entitled to think well of themselves, and meanly of others. They were of a respectable family in the north of England; a circumstance more deeply impressed on their memories than that their brother’s fortune and their own had been acquired by trade.

Mr. Bingley inherited property to the amount of nearly a hundred thousand pounds from his father, who had intended to purchase an estate, but did not live to do it. Mr. Bingley intended it likewise, and sometimes made choice of his county; but as he was now provided with a good house and the liberty of a manor, it was doubtful to many of those who best knew the easiness of his temper, whether he might not spend the remainder of his days at Netherfield, and leave the next generation to purchase.

빙리 씨는 토지를 사려고했으나 그러지 못했던 그의 아버지로부터 십만파운드에 가까운 재산을 물려받았다. 빙리씨도 마찬가지로 토지를 사려고 했고 때때로

His sisters were anxious for his having an estate of his own; but, though he was now only established as a tenant, Miss Bingley was by no means unwilling to preside at his table—nor was Mrs. Hurst, who had married a man of more fashion than fortune, less disposed to consider his house as her home when it suited her. Mr. Bingley had not been of age two years, when he was tempted by an accidental recommendation to look at Netherfield House. He did look at it, and into it for half-an-hour—was pleased with the situation and the principal rooms, satisfied with what the owner said in its praise, and took it immediately.

 

그의 여동생들은 그의 소유의 부동산을 그가 가지기를 간절히 바랬다. 하지만,

Between him and Darcy there was a very steady friendship, in spite of great opposition of character. Bingley was endeared to Darcy by the easiness, openness, and ductility of his temper, though no disposition could offer a greater contrast to his own, and though with his own he never appeared dissatisfied. On the strength of Darcy’s regard, Bingley had the firmest reliance, and of his judgement the highest opinion.

그와 달시는 정반대의 성격에도 불구하고 매우 꾸준히 친분을 쌓아왔다. 달시는 빙리의 느긋하고 관대하며 유연한 성격을 좋아했다. 비록 어떤 성격도 자신의

In understanding, Darcy was the superior. Bingley was by no means deficient, but Darcy was clever. He was at the same time haughty, reserved, and fastidious, and his manners, though well-bred, were not inviting. In that respect his friend had greatly the advantage. Bingley was sure of being liked wherever he appeared, Darcy was continually giving offense.

이해력에 있어서 달시가 우세했다. 빙리는 결코 부족하지않지만 달시가 영리했다.

그는 동시에 거만하고, 내성적이고, 세심했다. 그리고 비록 예의를 차렸지만,

The manner in which they spoke of the Meryton assembly was sufficiently characteristic. Bingley had never met with more pleasant people or prettier girls in his life; everybody had been most kind and attentive to him; there had been no formality, no stiffness; he had soon felt acquainted with all the room; and, as to Miss Bennet, he could not conceive an angel more beautiful. Darcy, on the contrary, had seen a collection of people in whom there was little beauty and no fashion, for none of whom he had felt the smallest interest, and from none received either attention or pleasure. Miss Bennet he acknowledged to be pretty, but she smiled too much.

그들이 메리톤 무도회에 대해 얘기하는것에 그들의 태도가 충분히 나타났다.

빙리는 살면서 이보다 유쾌한 사람이나 이쁜 여성들을 만난적이 없다고했다.

모든 사람들이 그에게 친절하고 신경써줬고 격식이나 완고함이 없어서 금방 룸의 모든사람들이 친근하게 느껴진것이다. 그리고 베넷 양으로부터 천사도 이보다

이쁠 수 없다고 생각했다. 반면에 달시는 별로 아름답지도 않고 촌스러운 사람의

모임이라고 했다. 그래서 그는 누구도 그의 관심을 조금도 끌지못했고, 

누구한테도 관심이나 유쾌함을 받지못했다고했다. 배넷 양은 이쁘다고 인정을

했지만, 웃음이 너무 헤프다고 했다.

 

Mrs. Hurst and her sister allowed it to be so—but still they admired her and liked her, and pronounced her to be a sweet girl, and one whom they would not object to know more of. Miss Bennet was therefore established as a sweet girl, and their brother felt authorized by such commendation to think of her as he chose.

허스트 부인과 빙리 양은 그렇다고 인정했지만 그들은 여전히 그녀를 좋아하고

칭찬했다. 그리고 그녀를 귀여운여자라고 하면서 베넷양과 더 알게되는것에

반대하지 않았다. 베넷 양은 결국 귀여운 아가씨로 표현되었고, 빙리는 베넷양에

대한 그러한 표현이 그의 선택을 인정하는것이라고 느껴졌다.
